Basework isn't even decent-looking...
It's fucking hideous 99% of the time.

I use bases when I'm too lazy to draw the image myself...even when I have it in my mind and want to draw it I'm too lazy or I'm sick and don't want to go through all the hassle >:I

I think bases are a good way to study anatomy and colouring. But i think that all bases should point out their reference. It's not fair to the original author who made the piece if he's not mentioned.

Sure, but there's an increasingly frequent tendency amongs DevArt users ot abuse bases as a cheap way to make a picture, both by people who make bases and use them :(

Define abuse. As long as base makers get credited I don't see the harm in it. Not all people have the same perception of anatomy, perspective and such. But they still want to make some kind of art.

If the "artists" never make an original picture then it's their problem. They were never the one to make an original piece. Why should you bother when you yourself can say you can draw? You cant force people and make them go throe the same training you went throe. You can just be proud of the work you have done and feel confident that you drew that without any ones help.

By 'abuse' I mean taking the original concept of bases - studying anatomy and coloring, like you said - and using bases as a quick way to make art which is unfortunately quite bad and has little to nothing to do with studying coloring or anatomy.
When people making hundreds of these [link] which results in thousands of these [link] and generations of kids waste their talents on exclusively making and using cheap bases and convincing themselves the art they've made is passable and then these things start showing up on the front page, it bothers me.
The decline in quality of art on this website in general bothers me.

I don't think that anyone who would truly want to grow as an artist would stay on this level. And i don't blame the "artists" as much as their supporters. The fans make the "art" popular.

I feel like bases are just like coloring in a coloring book and then claiming you made the whole picture.

It's so true..
sometimes those who use the base merely brush colors on it without any sense for the form of the actual base
they could use stickmen for that as well ~.~
